Drying Out

Playing in Box City

We headed out to the pediatrician's office yesterday, to get a gander at Nolan's leaking ear. The random-pediatrician-of-the-moment peeked with the otoscope and declared a rather severe infection. He can't even see the eardrum, because the infection is so thick it is completely occluding his ear canal. The solution? Ten days of Amoxicillin and Ciprodex ear drops. If the infection doesn't clear, we are to return to try something stronger. Hopefully the Amoxicillin will wipe the infection out.

Nolan hates ear drops. He'd rather chug oral medications by the truckload than deal with the sensation of liquid sliding down his ear canal. You can imagine the fun we're having pinning him down several times per day for the infernal drops.

Hopefully, in ten days, the infection will be gone and we won't see any more leaky ears for the rest of the year. A girl can hope, can't she?

Yuck.

Question: if he is getting infection after infection, why are you still using Amox? Shouldn't you be moving on to something stronger? One of my boys got EI's all the time when he was a baby and they were only wiped out by the heavy-duty stuff. Are they worried about antibiotic resistance?

Either way, hope you all get some relief soon.

Melanie, he's usually only uses Ciprodex (ear drops), which usually knocks out the infection. With tubes, the Ciprodex can get into the middle ear space and usually the antibiotic in the ear drops knocks out the infection, without the need for oral antibiotics. So the next step is Amoxicillin, and then they'll move onto something stronger.

Thanks for the kind words- I am tired of this kiddo having ear infections, etc.!

Well, I guess you can say your life never has a dull moment huh? Poor guy. Hope the antibiotics work quickly. I'll have to ask my SIL, but my nephew had EI after EI and they finally put him on something different and it seemed to work wonders.

Thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday. You comment was encouraging! Hope your little guy's ear starts feeling better soon.

Poor little guy!

I don't suppose he wants to wear a HA in that ear for the duration, either.

Julie, he's "off and on" with that hearing aid. He doesn't like to wear one without the other, so we put on his aids when we are going out and take them off to let the ear get some air when we're home. Hopefully it will dry up very quickly, so that we can go back to full-time aid use!

I hope it goes away forever. That's a bummer he's so opposed to the ear drops. It hurts as a parent to feel like we're torturing them.

Hi Leah

I've really enjoyed the blog, Michelle D put me on to it after we were on Summer Session 1 together. Sorry to hear the wee fella's having infection problems, the following article from the BBC was interesting (although no immediate solution unfortunately!).

We just had the EXACT same thing happen! Same treatment and all! I thought her ear drum had burst based on the amount of blood and fluid...poor babies!
