A Problem I'm Ecstatic to Have

Photobucket

Nolan, washing rocks in a bucket. Hey, it keeps him entertained!

We have stumbled upon a new problem during speech therapy. Nolan never quiets down! He talks incessantly from the second our SLP arrives to the moment she leaves, barely taking a moment to breathe.

How can this be a "problem," you ask? Well, he never stops blathering on to listen to what the question is or to pay attention to the current activity! An example would be:

Nolan: BALLOON! Balloon! I want balloon! I see ball! I want ball!

SLP (trying to get a word in edgewise): Yes, Nolan. Can you get the blue square and put it on the peg?

Nolan: Ball! I want ball! Cow! I see cow! Doggie! Doggie woof woof!

SLP (trying to go along with Nolan): Yes, the doggie says woof woof. Can you find the BIG doggie?

Nolan: Duck! Duck quack quack. Milk. I want milk. Want cup!! Want Matt. Weeee!

He is now talking so much that we're going to create a goal for conversational give-and-take in his next IFSP. We're writing another goal for Nolan to stop and listen, and respond appropriately to questions.

I can't help but be thrilled at our new "problem." The kid loves to talk. Now we just need to teach him to stop and listen to us!

That's too funny! I too would be ecstatic about that "problem". How encouraging that he wants to talk so much! Wouldn't that be cool if we got to meet at JTC next summer? It would be a small world!

thanks so much Leah. We are having a good break.India is very populated and so a country as beautiful as Austria is a grt change. Yes I can understand what u r going thru.We get tired of the chatter and want them to stop but when u suddenly feel what life would have been like without these sounds and noises because of lack of HI, you bless their chatter. Enjoy while it lasts.More chatter for u girl!

Leah, thanks for stopping by my blog. Your little boy is darling! It's good to know that there are so many other families out there who have survived these kinds of things. Thanks for the reference on Ethan, too. I have read his blog and it gives me a lot of hope.

I am smiling and laughing... that is a hilarious problem!

I went through stages with my boys of feeling like my entire life was being narrated. All that chatter can wear you out... but, hurray!

Yay! I'm so glad you've got that problem. I can't tell you how many times the Beast gets in trouble for "talking too much" in school. It always makes me shake my head a little because it's not the issue we thought we'd have. It's a blessing, and I'm so gld you're experiencing it, too.

Thanks for the laugh! I hope one day we have to put "turn taking" in Aiden's IEP too because he's just talking "too" much! Great milestone!
