I Might Have Gone a Little Overboard

We have flown with the boys a few times. They've all been a tad "difficult." With that in mind, I might have gone a tad overboard with purchasing in-flight entertainment from the dollar store.

For Nolan, there are post-it notes, foil star stickers, coloring books, puzzles, a fishing pole with plastic fish, toy dinosaurs, and a Mega Blocks toy train that he can put together. For Matt, there are two transformers, a small K'Nex travel pack (green race car), markers that clip on a carabiner, color explosion markers, Silly Bandz, a ViewMaster type toy, and lots of coloring/activity books. There's also the DVD player, which should keep them entertained for at least 90 minutes at a time.

Traveling with kids has definitely evolved. When my dad was taken on "vacation" to Missouri as a boy, things were different. They drove from California to Missouri, because airfare was too expensive for a family of eight. My grandfather could only take one week of unpaid vacation per year, so they drove quickly, only stopping when they needed gas. Strong bladders were a necessity in this family, as was a penchant for beans cooked on the carburetor (no time to stop for food). True story.

I figure if they could survive a trip through the desert in a car lacking air conditioning, living off of tinned goods cooked in increments of 50 miles on the carburetor, then we can survive a six hour plane flight with two small children.

I hope.

I am so jealous y'all get to go to John Tracy! We were actually enrolled but had to drop out because of our move. I cannot wait to hear all about your experiences there. Good luck!

Good luck! I stumbled upon a 50% off sale at the Target Dollar bin today, so I picked up a few more things for the stash. Noah's only flown once before and he was fine, but that was back when he took naps. He's a lot louder than he used to be so I'm hopeful that no one intends to rest during our early morning flight to Cleveland. I don't think he'll be bad, but I also don't think he'll be particularly reserved.

I'm so excited for you! Have a wonderful and safe trip! I'll be on a plane all day long the same day, you don't happen to have a layover in Minneapolis do you? I'll be there for 3 hours....

Can't wait to hear all about it!

Heather, our layover is in Vegas! We usually fly Continental- I wish we were this time, because we'd probably be on Emily's flight, lol!

I call that a well-prepared Mom. And I am sure that the other travelers on that flight will thank you for that!

You rock, Leah!

I bought Yogos, Rice Krispie Treats, Honey Nut Cheerio bars, and fruit snacks by the truckload. The Yogos even came with a free dispenser toy- bonus!

You sound prepared. Good luck!

Try to let them run/move/jump/etc before the flight as well. I'm not sure what time your flight is/what time you'll need to leave but some time outdoors or at a resteraunt playspace may be in order.

Melissa and Doug has some cool magnetic pattern blocks. I was eying them to buy.... I can't remember how much they are though. That may be something that Matt would enjoy. But, you may have plenty already :)

Another thing you can do is wrap some items, that way they get a "present" in the flight to open and you can gradually introduce new things.

You'll all survive. It will be great and so well worth any plane drama.

I don't think you can go overboard with in flight entertainment!
